I do a lot of long haul travel and I recently came across some debate about whether we should be wearing sunscreen on planes. I'll be honest, I love sunscreen.. partly to prevent skin cancer… but mostly because I want to look young forever. However, I'd never previously considered whether I needed it at 35,000 feet.
A 2014 meta-analysis found that rates of melanoma in cabin crew and pilots were approximately twice that of the general population. The studies were observational so causation is hard to establish. Potential explanations include cosmic radiation at altitude, UV exposure through windows, time spent outside during transfers, and the skin types of people drawn to these roles.
The Skin Cancer Council Australia offers some reassurance for passengers. Cabin windows have multiple layers of plastic that are highly effective at blocking both UVA and UVB radiation, and there is no credible evidence that passengers can get sunburnt on commercial flights.
Overall, on a commercial flight you are probably unlikely to be at significant risk. But there is no harm in wearing sunscreen regardless. If anything, it will at least protect you from the sun while waiting to board.

For those awaiting an update on my calf injury, I have been off crutches for a while, have progressed to single leg calf raises and did my first park run yesterday. I’ve been told I need to learn to activate and strengthen my glute max & hamstrings. Given how sedentary I am when at work, the activation exercises will be particularly important on clinic days. If you're interested in the exercises that can help you reduce lower back pain and improve pelvic stability, just reply to this email!
